Considered to be one of the biggest events to promote the Azores in the world and one of the most important motorsport events held on the European continent, the 55th Azores Rallye will be held between the 16th and 18th of September, thus being part of the set of events that closes this year’s edition of the FIA European Rally Championship.
After the postponement to which he was subjected, due to the worsening of the epidemiological situation verified on the island of São Miguel, the event organized by Grupo Desportivo Comercial is now being held, according to the original plan of the promoter of the championship, Eurosport Events, together with Rali Serras de Fafe / Montelongo.
Rui Moniz, Head of the Board of Grupo Desportivo Comercial, clarifies that “the date now found results from the concertation and effort of several entities, of which we highlight the FIA, the world motorsport authority, FPAK, its national counterpart, thus allowing the creation of a time window to carry out the 55th Azores Rallye”.
“In short,” continues the chairman of the 55th Azores Rallye Organizing Committee, “the original plans are back on the table, with the realization of the Portuguese rallies that are part of the FIA ERC calendar, in a common space of time, thus optimizing the cost control that was a manifest wish from the teams”.
That said, all conditions are gathered for another memorable edition of the Azores Rallye, with Rui Moniz calling for “the support of all to fully comply with the health standards so that the numbers of contagion by Covid- 19 may decrease and that there may be conditions for us to return to normality, allowing events to be held to help the recovery of all sectors of economic activity in the Azores”.
The 55th Azores Rallye is now scheduled to take place between the 16th and the 18th of September, becoming the fifth event on the sports calendar of the FIA European Rally Championship, 2021 edition.
